Robot Vacuum Smells Bad? How to Find the Source and What to Check

Short answer: If your robot vacuum smells bad, rule out the warning signs first. If there are none, work out whether the smell is coming from the dry-debris side (the robot, dock bag or dust container) or the wet side (mop, water tanks, dock), then follow the instructions for your exact model. Manufacturer examples include debris in a dock bag, a mop that hasn’t dried and water left standing in a tank. A smell can’t confirm any of these in your home, so treat them as places to look, not a diagnosis.

Bot ’n’ Brush has not tested robot vacuums for this guide. It draws on published manufacturer and fire-service sources, named where they are used, and it can’t tell you whether your machine is safe.

Safety first

Smoke, flames or dangerous heat

If the product is smoking, on fire or too hot to be near, leave the area, raise the alarm and call 999. London Fire Brigade’s advice for a battery fire is to get out immediately and not try to tackle it, and it warns that the smoke can be toxic (London Fire Brigade guidance on e-bike and e-scooter battery warning signs).

Don’t approach, move, open or handle the product, and don’t go near it to unplug it. Leaving comes first.

Warning signs without smoke or flames

Electrical Safety First’s advice for robot vacuums is to avoid using one if you notice unusual smells or sounds. If there is a burning smell, sparking, cracks or damage, or unusual noises, it says to switch the cleaner off immediately and contact the retailer or manufacturer (Electrical Safety First advice for robot vacuums).

Only switch off at the wall if it is safe to reach the socket without approaching a dangerously hot, smoking or burning product. Do not move or handle the product to disconnect it. If there is smoke or fire, leave and call 999. If you can’t tell whether a smell is ordinary or a warning, stop using the robot and contact the manufacturer or retailer. Don’t run it again to see whether the smell returns.

London Fire Brigade’s page on e-bike and e-scooter batteries lists battery warning signs: extreme heat, swelling or lumps, leaking or damage, hissing or cracking sounds, and strong chemical smells. Its advice for those batteries is to stop using the device, turn it off, unplug it and contact the manufacturer or retailer.

Our robot vacuum troubleshooting guide has the fuller stop-use list.

Which side is the smell on?

  • Dry-debris side: the robot’s bin and filter, plus the dock’s dust bag or container if it has one. Our guide to self-emptying robot vacuums explains bagged and bagless docks.
  • Wet side: mop pads or cloths, the clean-water and dirty-water tanks, and any wash tray in the dock. Our robot vacuum mopping guide explains how these systems differ.

A smell may come from either side, so don’t assume it’s the part you first suspect.

Manufacturer examples of possible sources

These are clues from specific manufacturers, not a diagnosis of your robot.

Manufacturer examples of possible odour sources, with the action each manufacturer describes and when it says to seek help
Source area and model What the manufacturer says Action it describes Seek help
Dock dust bag. iRobot Clean Base family (UK page dated Nov 2021, no model list, current applicability unconfirmed) Certain types of debris building up, particularly in higher humidity, can cause a smell in the bag. Replace the bag if the smell appears after many cleanings. If the smell continues with a correctly fitted new bag.
Mop. Dreame X40 Master only (US-English help page) A mop that hasn’t dried properly, hasn’t been used for a while, or sits in a humid home can lead to odd smells. Extra drying on models with a dock dry function, and cleaning the mop by hand. Dreame says to contact its support if the smell persists.
Clean-water tank. Dreame X40 Master only Stagnant water in the tank. Replace the water rather than leaving it standing. As above.
Clean and dirty-water tanks. Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 6 station only (UK page) Tanks not cleaned for a long time, unused water left in the clean tank, dirty water left in the dirty tank after use. Keep the tank dry when not in use and discard dirty water promptly. For a strong odour, Xiaomi suggests air-drying the tank in a well-ventilated area for at least 24 hours, then checking again. Xiaomi says to contact after-sales support if the smell gets increasingly severe.

The table is not an exhaustive list of possible sources. For the robot’s bin, filter and other accessible parts, use the care instructions for your exact model; the sources reviewed here do not establish an odour-specific remedy for them.

Use your exact model’s instructions

Care rules differ between models, and a cleaning permission doesn’t show that a part is causing a smell or that cleaning it will fix one. Two examples:

  • iRobot Roomba e and i series (UK support page): the filter isn’t designed to be washed or wetted, while the bin may be rinsed by hand in warm water and must be completely dry before it goes back.
  • Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra (CE English manual; UK edition not confirmed): the dustbin and its washable filter are rinsed in clean water with no cleaning liquid. The manual also says not to use disinfectant and not to rinse the robot or dock.

Use only the cleaners, liquids and methods your model’s manual or support page names for that specific part. If it doesn’t name one, don’t add one, and don’t carry a method over from another part or brand. That includes air fresheners, scented products and tank additives. A masked smell can leave its source in place, so look for the source first. Our robot vacuum maintenance guide covers broader upkeep.

If the smell persists or gets worse

  1. Check the smell again after you’ve followed your model’s instructions for the part concerned and let wet parts dry as they describe.
  2. If it persists, worsens or you can’t explain it, contact the manufacturer or retailer and keep your proof of purchase.
  3. Don’t use the smell to judge whether a suspect product is safe. Our robot vacuum troubleshooting guide covers when to stop DIY checks.
